American Hunter-Gatherers “lemme learn ya ‘bout the AR-15
/M4 carbine. Where did it come from this AR? Well my little friend the AR-15
was first built by ArmaLite (now manufactured by Colt, Olympic Arms and many
others) as a selective fire rifle for yes the United States Armed Forces. Through
the years and various uses these short rifles have become known worldwide. The M4
carbine is a family of firearms tracing its lineage back to earlier carbine
(a short barreled light rifle) versions of the M16 rifle, all based on the
original AR-15 rifle designed by Eugene Stoner. The M4 is an AR-15 in
the civilian and military, and competitive shooting world, and yes “Grasshopper”
it can be used for hunting!
The M4 is a 16" barrel with the retractable stock. There are SO many versions out now, that even most "M4's" are not M4's.
In general a Standard AR15 has a fixed stock and 20" barrel. But as I said, there are hundreds of variations out there now. All of them are ARs.
What is a M16 or and M4?
The rifle is a carbine and is commonly used in our militarily as an assault rifle, it can be used in competitive shooting and for game hunting: The machine itself well, it is a gas-operated, magazine-fed, selective fire, shoulder-fired weapon with a telescoping stock. A shortened variant of the M16A2 rifle, the M4 has a 14.5 in (370 mm) barrel, allowing its user to better operate in close quarters combat. The M4 has selective fire options including semi-automatic and three-round burst (like the M16A2 and M16A4), while the M4A1 has the capability to fire fully automatic instead of three-round burst (like the M16A1 and M16A3). The carbine is also capable of mounting an M203 grenade launcher (the M203A1 with a 9-inch barrel as opposed to the standard 12-inch barrel of the M203 used on the M16 series) as well as its successor; the M320 grenade launcher...
The original rifle was the M16 or AR-15 with a 20" barrel.
The M16A1 was upgraded with a forward assist (The forward assist on a rifle is a button found commonly on M16 and AR-15 styled rifles, usually located near the bolt closure, that when hit will push the bolt carrier forward, ensuring that the bolt is locked. In order to ensure that the extractor is clipped around the rim of the shell, the forward assist is usually struck rather than pushed. It is commonly incorporated into standard loading procedure to prepare a weapon for a life threatening situation, or to close the bolt when the weapon is excessively dirty. It can also be used to close a bolt that was gently let down, rather than released under full spring compression, to keep the noise of closing the bolt to a minimum.)
The M16A2 got a new rear sight system and a heavier 20" barrel with round forend. The M16A2 was semi/ 3 round burst instead of full auto.
The M16A3 is the same rifle as the A2 with the removable carry handle.
The M4 carbine has the 16" barrel with the adjustable stock. Some features of the M4 and M4A1 compared to a full-length M16-series rifle include:

Compact size
Shortened barrel 14.5 in (370 mm), which includes
the shorter carbine gas system.
Telescoping buttstock
However, there have been some criticisms of the carbine,
such as lower muzzle velocities and louder report due to the
shorter barrel, additional stress on parts because of the shorter gas system,
and a tendency to overheat faster than the M16A2.
The AR-15, like all other semi-automatic rifles, is legal
for individuals who need one for competitive use (IPSC rifle or 3-gun matches).
There are no federal restrictions on the ownership of AR-15 rifles in the United States .
During the period 1994–2004 variants with certain features such as collapsible
stocks, flash suppressors, and bayonet lugs were
prohibited for sales to civilians by the Violent Crime Control and
Law Enforcement Act of 1994, with the included Assault Weapons Ban. Included in this
was a restriction on the pistol grip that protrudes beneath the stock,
which was considered an accessory feature under the ban and was subject to
restrictions. Some rifles were manufactured with a grip not described under the
Ban installed in its place. Those AR-15s that were manufactured with those
features, as well as the accompanying full capacity magazines, were stamped
"Restricted Military/Government/Law Enforcement/Export Only". The
restrictions only applied to guns manufactured after the ban took effect. It
was legal to own, sell, or buy any gun built before 1994. Hundreds of thousands
of pre-ban ARs were sold during the ban as well as new guns redesigned to be legal.
So my fellow American Hunter-Gatherers this versatile
machine has been described to you. If you have never fired one and do you will
not be impressed by its boom, you will be impressed by it accuracy, easy of use
and the ability to customize the shot rifle to your own liking. The AR-15/M4 is
a firearm that can be loved by the educated operator or hated by naive anti-
second amendment gun lobbyists for the sake of ignorance.
